Workplace Aggression Prevention Dashboard: Introduction

What is Workplace Aggression?

Workplace aggression is a broad concept that covers a spectrum of harmful behaviours, ranging from subtle acts of disrespect to serious, criminal offences. These behaviours include, but are not limited to:

  • Bullying
  • Harassment
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Violence
  • Cyberaggression
  • Discrimination
  • Victimisation
  • Third-party aggression

These actions may be physical, psychological, or sexual in nature, and can involve internal actors (e.g., colleagues, managers) or external parties (e.g., customers, patients, clients). Aggression may occur as a single event or as part of an ongoing pattern. It can also be intentional or unintentional—but in all cases, the impact on the recipient is central to how workplace aggression is experienced and addressed.

Why do we need to tackle Workplace Aggression?

The consequences of workplace aggression are often profound, far-reaching, and enduring, affecting individuals, organisations, and society at large.

For Individuals

Direct exposure to workplace aggression can lead to:

  • Reduced job satisfaction and commitment
  • Higher stress and burnout
  • Increased turnover intentions
  • Decreased general health
  • Higher organisational deviance
  • Greater psychological detachment from work

For Organisations

Workplace aggression is linked to:

  • Higher rates of absenteeism and presenteeism
  • Increased staff turnover and recruitment costs
  • Lower productivity and innovation
  • Damage to team dynamics and organisational reputation
  • Greater risk of legal and financial consequences

There is also evidence that the indirect experience of bullying (i.e. witnessing bullying) is associated with negative health and wellbeing, highlighting the broader ripple effects across the workforce.

How to use the Workplace Aggression Diagnostic Tool

The Workplace Aggression Dashboard is a practical, easy-to-use tool designed to help organisations assess and strengthen their approach to preventing and addressing workplace aggression. It enables you to review current practices, identify gaps in policies and support systems, visualise existing prevention strategies, and inform tailored interventions suited to your organisational context.

While primarily intended for HR professionals and senior leaders, the dashboard can also be used by team leaders, department heads, and wellbeing champions to better understand and improve their local team environment.

The tool guides users through four key areas — Monitoring, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention — encouraging reflection on current measures and helping identify strengths and gaps across each stage of prevention.

Once completed, the dashboard generates a visual summary of results alongside tailored recommendations to support targeted action planning and strengthen prevention efforts.
